“Who’s this now?” Kael asked.
“That’s Jennie the florist,” Garcelle offered.
“On a Sunday?” Lisha asked. “Which one of my boys messed up big time?”
Neema looked up from her phone and eyed the white minivan pulling up the driveway. “It’s for me,” she said as she moved across the porch and down the stairs just as a woman climbed from the van and pulled out a long and slender gold box.
“Hey there, everybody,” Jennie said in a loud voice that was larger than her petite size. “I got a delivery for Neema.”
She smiled and shook her head as she slid the phone back into her pocket. “That’s me,” she said, already extending her hands.
Jennie handed them over to her. “I hope you enjoy them,” she said, before giving everyone a wave and turning back to her van.
“Miss Jennie,” Kaleb called to her, rising from his seat on the porch and reaching for his wallet from the back pocket of his jeans.
She climbed into the driver’s seat and looked back at him through the open van door. “The tip was included. No worries. Y’all enjoy the rest of your day.”
With that, she closed the door and reversed into a semi arc before taking off down the paved driveway.
Neema sat on the bottom step and took the lid off the box. An arrangement of lilies and sunflowers wrapped in paper. There was no card. None was needed.
That was Dane. Doing just what it took to make sure he was in her thoughts. Proving without being asked that he paid attention to even the little things she mentioned, like having family dinner every Sunday at her grandparents. Or that she actually loved colorful lilies and sunflowers to lavender roses.
Damn flirt. Damn sexy flirt.
“Damn shame to have a man’s nose wide open like that,” Kade said.
The men all chuckled. The ladies all sighed at the romance of it all.
“I think it’s cute,” Garcelle said.
“Yeah, if it was getting him somewhere,” Kade drawled.
“Maybe it is,” Lisha said with wisdom.
“There’s nothing wrong with having fun, Neema,” her mother said.
She looked to her as she came down the steps to sit beside her. The spring winds caused the ends of Neema’s bangs to flutter up in the air. “Ma—”
“Let me finish. I’m your mother and I know you just like I know all my babies. Okay?” Zaria asked, her voice low enough for just Neema’s ears.
Neema nodded. “Yes ma’am.”
“Although I respect your father for being a great dad to you and Meena, I was miserable in our marriage. I gave up so much of myself to him and what he wanted that I was lost to what I wanted,” she said, her voice for only her daughter’s ears.
Neema’s eyes rested on her mother as she voiced the very issues she was dealing with herself.
Zaria, with a mother’s wisdom, saw the awareness and nodded. “I suspected the same thing would happen to you with Crave. I thought me giving you room to make your own choices in life—good or bad—was me giving you the chance to learn and mature, but now I see I should have spoken up.
